Introduction of DITA (Structure FrameMaker)

August 18, 2014 | By | No Comments

What is DITA?

DITA, the full name is Darwin Information Typing Architecture. As Wikipedia says, it is an XML data model for authoring and, with the DITA Open Toolkit, publishing. It is a standard that is defined and maintained by the OASIS DITA Technical Committee.

The difference between DITA and ordinary FrameMaker is that we can modify the paragraph style, character style or other styles where we need to modify. But in DITA, we can't do as this. Because DITA is Structure FrameMaker. When it is written at the beginning, all the styles are designed in the template and EDD. All the styles are controlled by the template and EDD. If we want to change one of them, we should modify EDD, not modify the paragraph, the character or others directly.

Now DITA is used to control the quality and improve efficiency of the large-scale and complex product manuals, software specification document, maintenance operations guide, operational guidelines and other documents. This is a trend. There are many companies using this technology. For example: IBM, EMC, Adobe, Intel, ATI / ADM, Philips, NOKIA and Boeing, etc.

Next time, I will introduce some setup of DITA.
